NEW DELHI: Absence of jurisdiction over Delhi’s law enforcement may have deprived the AAP government of any control over policing the capital, but it is looking at solutions in technology to help women caught in distress situations real time. In the near future, women in distress will be able to summon help from nearby PCR van or police station and inform family by merely opening a smart phone-based mobile application or pressing a set of letters on the keypad of a simple phone.

Speaking with ET, AAP’s inhouse Telecom expert and Dwarka MLA Adarsh Shastri said that the administration will use “geo tagging” technology to implement these ideas. “We expect women to have this system on their phone through a specific app designed for the safety of women. Since all phones may not have app support capabilities, a dedicated button or set of buttons (on the keypad) could be used. Through these we will try to see how we could use the system of geo-tagging, where home location, emergency contact numbers, and the woman’s location can be known only when she uses the application.

Only in situations where she uses this application geo-tagging will enable law enforcement agencies to track where she is,” Shastri said.

The former Apple employee is in-charge of the party’s ‘Governance on mobile phone’ initiative, a part of which is this mobile phone-based idea for women’s safety. He conceded that, since it does not having jurisdiction over police, this is one of the ways in which it is trying to give solution to the problem.
