A look at the background of Telangana controversy
The Telangana Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Let’s have a look at the background to the controversy:

Telangana is a part of Andhra Pradesh, seen as culturally distinct from other regions of the state such as Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema.

It comprises 10 districts of AP, including one of the most contentious areas — Hyderabad.

Since the 1950s, when AP was formed, people of Telangana had protested against the integration of the region with the rest of the state. Since then there have been periodic agitations for separate statehood, with the most recent one beginning in 2009.

T-supporters claim AP’s bulk of revenues comes from the Telangana region, but only a minority of government jobs and other resources devolve to the people of the region.
