A foodie twist to Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations in Bengaluru

This July 26 marks 20 years of the Kargil war, and it is to commemorate the heroes who laid down their lives for Operation Vijay, the day is celebrated as Kargil Vijay Diwas. While a bevy of celebrations are planned across the country to mark the day, Bengaluru’s restaurants are also paying homage to these heroes in their own way.

Military themed café Olive Planet, run by two ex-army officers, has taken the lead by organising an event on Friday, where patrons can write, draw or paint messages to soldiers serving at the borders.

Hunger Camp, another army style café at JP Nagar will be inviting families of Kargil war martyrs for a special dinner. “Being an army themed café, we wanted to mark Kargil Vijay Diwas and pay respects to the martyrs and their families. The two-day special is free of cost for the families of defense personnel,” Chetan Patel, partner at the restaurant said. Civilians are welcome too, but have to pay for their meals, Patel added.


However, it’s not just army themed restaurants that are celebrating the day –Vidyarthi Bhavan at Gandhi Bazaar is offering special meals army personnel and their families free of cost, while Brahmin’s Thatte Idli is offering a 50% discount to them across all outlets. Subhash Sharma, partner at Brahmin’s Thatte Idli said it’s the least they can do for the soldiers out there. “I personally have cousins and friends in the army and navy and we thought why not commemorate their sacrifices. We also had a special offer for patrons who voted in the general elections in May.”
