India's latest Covid-19 case count rose by 8,171 in the past 24 hours to reach 1,98,706, according to Union Health ministry's daily update.

At 8 am, fatalities stood at 5,598, and the number of the cured/discharged at 95,527.

Meanwhile, even as the number of cases and deaths rose sharply over the past few days, the the fatality rate in India (based on latest figures) fell to 2.83% from 3.3% about a month and a half ago.


The recovery rate, on the other hand, has now reached 48.2% amongst patients, up from 38.3% on May 18, from 26.6% on May 3, and from 11.4% on April 15.

India has now gone past France in total case count to become the seventh worst-hit country on the planet.
