NEW DELHI: When it comes to filing of income tax returns, an average eight of every ten newly elected MLAs across the four assemblies have done so.

As per an analysis of income tax returns declared by candidates in their election affidavits, Delhi tops the chart with 90 per cent such elected MLAs, followed by Rajasthan (87 per cent), Madhya Pradesh (77 per cent) and Chhattishgarh (70 per cent).

The results for these four assembly elections were declared last night. While BJP has secured majority in three states, Delhi elections have thrown a hung assembly with BJP emerging as the single largest party. While debutante Aaam Aadmi Party has come a close second, ruling Congress has been pushed to a distant third place.

In absolute terms, 63 new MLAs in 70-member strong Delhi assembly have declared their ITRs, while the number is same for 90-member Chhatisgarh assembly.

In Rajasthan, 172 new MLAs have declared their ITRs, while the same for Madhya Pradesh is 177. The total number of assembly seats in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are 200 and 230, respectively.

In terms of declaration of permanent account number (PAN), only one per cent (one) newly elected MLAs in Delhi have not declared their respective PAN, while the same stood at five per cent (nine) in Rajasthan.

In Madhya Pradesh, 8 per cent of winners (19) have have not declared their PAN, while the same stood at 11 per cent (10) for Chhatisgarh.

Issued by the Income Tax Department, PAN is a must for filing tax returns.
