73% voting in final phase of Himachal poll

DHARAMSHALA: With weather gods favouring, second phase of Assembly elections for the 65 seats in Himachal Pradesh winessed a high polling percentage of 71- 73 per cent. In some of the constituencies the polling continued till 7 pm.

India’s first polling booth set up exclusively for leprosy patients recorded 100 per cent turnout in the Kasauli constituency. Also the ‘Jubal kotkhai’ constituency in District Shimla recorded the second highest polling of 73.6 per cent.

The voters will decide the fate of 324 candidates, who are in the fray. Polling began at 8 am in the morning at 5,946 polling stations spread in ten districts of the hill state.

In the 2003 Assembly elections as well polling percentage was 73%. Manisha Nanda, Chief Electoral Officer, Himachal Pradesh says, “Polling was peaceful. It’s close to 71-73 per cent.”

Former chief minister Prem kumar Dhumal, said, “People have turned out to cast their franchise in good numbers. BJP was always strong in the lower districts of the state. The ball is in the court of the denizens and BJP will welcome the voters verdict, whatever it may be.”

Nearly 65% of voters cast their votes in Rohru, constituency in Shimla district from where Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh is seeking re-election. Polling spread across ten districts passed off by and large peacefully amid tight security arrangements.

The polling on Wednesday decided the electoral fate of 324 candidates spread across ten districts including chief minister Virbhadra Singh, main opposition BJP’s chief ministerial nominee Prem Kumar Dhumal, Speaker G R Musafir, senior ministers Vidya Stokes, Kaul Singh Thakur and Raj Kishan Gaur and state BJP chief Jai Ram Thakur. Counting of votes will take place on December 28.
