GUWAHATI: Nearly 73 per cent polling took place today in elections in 743 wards under 74 municipal boards and town committees across Assam.

"The voting went peacefully. The preliminary estimate shows that overall 72.7 per cent polling has taken place in all wards. The final data may show little more percentage of voting," Assam State Election Commissioner H N Bora told PTI here.

The total number of registered voters in these places is nearly 14 lakh.

"Re-poll will take place on Wednesday in one polling booth due to complaints of anomalies in ballot papers by the candidates of Ward No 2 in Hojai municipality," he said.

Bora said nearly 2,900 candidates are in the fray in the election.

Election process in three wards under Demow town committee was adjourned as per a Gawuhati High Court order, he said.
