A strong 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck near a chain of islands in Alaska, the US Geological Survey said.

WASHINGTON: A strong 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck near a chain of islands in Alaska, the US Geological Survey said.

The earthquake, which was 35 kilometres deep, took place at 2205 GMT (0335 IST on Thursday) about 50 km southeast of Nikolski, a town in the Aleutian Islands, the USGS said.

There were no immediate reports of damage, the USGS said on its website.
