NEW DELHI: As many as 583 cases of corruption have been registered by the CBI between January and November this year, the government said.

A total of 650, 600, 703 and 583 cases of corruption under Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 were registered in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 (upto November) respectively, Minister of State for personnel V Narayanasamy told Lok Sabha in a written reply.

The conviction rate of CBI during 2013 (till October) is 72.73 per cent, he said.

Investigation and registration of cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act are being done by the CBI at the central level and by respective state police, anti corruption bureaus etc.

In order to ensure timely investigation and better conviction rate, the Government has taken various measures for improving the functioning of the CBI, including modernisation of the agency, improvement in training, infrastructure, improving conditions of work and employment of staff, rigorous monitoring of the agency's investigation by the CVC, the Minister said.

"The conviction rate of CBI during 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 (upto October) is 71.90 per cent, 64.7 per cent, 67 per cent and 72.73 per cent respectively," he said.

In reply to another question, Narayanasamy said the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) had received 5,528 and 5,573 cases respectively to give advice (punishment) during last year and 2011.
