GUWAHATI: Forty eight people have been named in the chargesheet filed by the Assam Police over the mob lynching of two youths in Karbi Anglong in June.

The two young men, Nilotpal Das and Abhijit Nath, who were vacationing in the region, were beaten to death by a mob of locals over rumours they were child-lifters.

The accused have been charged with murder, wrongful restraint, unlawful assembly to commit offence of common object, and other sections of the IPC.

Assam Director General of police, Kuladhar Saikia, said Saturday that the charge sheet was filed before the Chief judicial magistrate court within 90 days of the incident.

“Mob lynching is discussed nationally now, we have, after detailed investigation, filed the charge sheet. This is a big step. Police had formed a special investigation team to investigate the case,” he said.

The DGP said that police will seek trail in a fast track court.Earlier the opposition congress had demanded a judicial inquiry in the mob lynching case.
