47 labourers, workers of Delhi metro killed since 2006: Roy
Forty seven labourers and workers of Delhi Metro were killed since 2006 during various phases of construction of the transport system, with 15 of them losing their lives this year.
Around 55 people were injured during the same period in various mishaps involving the Delhi Metro.
Union Minister of State for Urban Development Saugata Roy told Lok Sabha that after obtaining all details about the accident on October 19 at DMRC's construction site at Laxmi Nagar, he had informed all the Metro authorities across the country the need to ensure adequate safety measures to prevent recurrence of mishaps.
He said DMRC has reported that after every accident in its projects involving loss of life or serious injury the safety team along with an expert of General Consultants conducts a detailed investigation and submits a report to the management.
Roy said the DMRC has a three-tier safety enforcement system in Delhi Metro. "Firstly a safety team employed by the contractor himself, at second level DMRC's safety audit team headed by an experienced expatriate and thirdly DMRC's own engineers exercising due checks," he said.
On the issue of compensation, he said it is said to have been paid or deposited with the Workman Compensation Commissioner in most of the cases involving fatalities as well as injuries.
On July 12, seven people were killed when an under- construction bridge of the Metro collapsed in south Delhi.
