PATNA: Over 400 chickens were culled in Bihar's Katihar district as a precautionary measure to check the spread of bird flu virus from neighbouring Malda district of West Bengal.
"These birds were culled in six panchayats in Azamnagar block till late night of Thursday. The process was delayed as members of the culling teams had to collect the birds from individual houses," Deputy Development Commissioner Mithilesh Kumar Singh said.
Culling was suspended temporarily on Friday, following shortage of the anti-viral medicine, Tamiflu.
Bihar government on Thursday, set up rapid response teams at all blocks in Kishanganj, Purnia, Araria and Katihar districts to stop supply of poultry from West Bengal.
Officials said special vigils are being carried out on the situation in bordering districts of Araria, Kishanganj, Purnia and Katihar.
Serum collected from the birds of affected panchayats were also sent to Regional Diseases Diagonstic Laboratory in Kolkata for testing.
