342 industries in Madhya Pradesh flout pollution control norms

Close to 350 commercial units in Madhya Pradesh have flouted pollution control norms and are emitting harmful air and water effluents beyond the permissible limits.

BHOPAL: Close to 350 commercial units in Madhya Pradesh have flouted pollution control norms and are emitting harmful air and water effluents beyond the permissible limits.

In reply to an RTI query, the State Pollution Control Board gave details of about 342 such industries which violated standard pollution control norms during 2010-11.

A highest of 60 such firms are located in Bhopal, followed by 56 in Jabalpur, 51 in Dhar, 45 each in Indore and Ujjain districts, 23 in Shahdol, 16 each in Rewa and Gwalior region, 11 each in Satna and Guna districts and eight in Sagar.

Exercising his Right to Information, environment activist Ajay Dubey had filed an application seeking information on number of industries emitting waste in air and water beyond the norms set by the government.

"The reply is based on the result carried out by monitoring their waste (air and water effluents) during 2010-11," the MP Pollution Control Board said.

"It is really a matter of concern. There are many more industries which are polluting the environment. We have decided to seek action against these harmful commercial establishments in the Green Tribunal," Dubey said.

Some of the prominent companies named in the RTI reply include Godrej Hershey Foods and Beverages Ltd, Permalli Wallace Ltd, Central Railways Coach Repairs, Som Distilleries Ltd, Adani Walmer Ltd, Shujalpur, Tata International Limited, Dewas, Gail India Ltd, Vijaypur, Everest India Ltd, Katani, Raymonds Ltd, Chindwara, Orient paper Mill Ltd, Shahdol, Birla Corporation Ltd, Cement Division, Satna, MP Beer Product Pvt Ltd, Indore, L&T, Pithampur and Lupin Laboratories Limited.

"We have directed the industries to improve their functioning and introduce or implement measure to check water and air pollution being caused by the waste emanating from there," the official said.
