IMPHAL: Altogether 335 councillors of municipal councils and nagar panchayats in Manipur have submitted their resignation letters to Chief Minister O. Ibobi Singh in protest against huge monetary demand by militant outfits, official sources said on Tuesday.

Sources said the councillors handed over their letters to the chief minister yesterday. Singh urged them to withdraw their resignations.

A spokesman of the All Manipur Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat Joint Action Committee (JAC) said councillors were unable to perform their official duties because of threats, intimidations and abduction by militants for non payment of their demand.

He said militant outfits wanted diversion of huge amount of funds and added that this money was meant for different welfare schemes of the poor.

He said the councillors had been on strike since April 15 urging the militants to withdraw their monetary demand and since they failed to oblige, the councillors had no alternative but to resign from municipal councils.

There are eight municipal councils and 18 nagar panchayats in Manipur.
