300 nominees withdraw before May 10 polls in Karnataka

Around 800 candidates remained in the fray for the first phase of Assembly polls in Karnataka on May 10, following withdrawal by nearly 300 nominees on Saturday.

BANGALORE: Around 800 candidates remained in the fray for the first phase of Assembly polls in Karnataka on May 10, following withdrawal by nearly 300 nominees on Saturday.

The figure does not include the tally from the segments under Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (Greater Bangalore City Corporation) and Chikkaballapura district, from where the information is yet to be received at the election office here.

Besides a large number of independents, the withdrawal also included some rebels, officials sources said.

The Congress rebels who withdrew included C M Lingappa (Ramanagara) and Mudda Hanume Gowda (Kunigal).

Eighty nine Assembly segments in 11 districts of Tumkur, Chikkaballapur, Kolar, Bangalore Urban, Bangalore Rural, Ramanagar, Mandya, Hassan, Kodagu, Mysore and Chamarajnagar will go polls in the first phase.

Prominent candidates whose poll fortunes will be decided in this phase include, former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, who is seeking re-election from Ramanagar, his brother H D Revanna (Holenarasipura), former deputy chief minister Siddaramaiah (Varuna in Mysore), CWC member Dr G Parameshwara (Koratagere in Tumkur), Union Minister Ambareesh (Srirangapatn in Mysore), former minister Katta Subramanya Naidu (Hebbal), R Ashok (Padmanabhanagar) and R Roshan Baig (Shivajinagar).

Former minister G T Devegowda who quit JDS on the eve of election is trying his luck on BJP ticket in Hunsur.

Other notables figuring in the poll fray also include former minister H Vishwanath of Congress in K R Pet and Assembly Speaker Krishna who is seeking re-election in Krishnarajanagar.
