30.76 lakh houses sanctioned under PMAY (Urban) till now: Hardeep Singh Puri

The government has sanctioned 30.76 lakh houses for the urban poor since the launch of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) scheme in June 2015, Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri said today.

Currently, 15.65 lakh houses are at various stages of construction and about 4.13 lakh houses have been built in the last two years, he said.

"Since the launch of PMAY(U) on June 25, 2015, the government has sanctioned a total of 30.76 lakh houses across all verticals," Puri said at a national workshop on PMAY (Urban) and Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) here.


The minister said the demand for housing was pegged at about 12 million and the government has taken a number of initiatives to support segments from infrastructure status to affordable housing.

"Emphasis on reforms, like stamp duty exemption and single window clearance, have been actively pursued by the ministry," the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Housing and Urban Affairs said.

The workshop was held to deliberate on the bottlenecks and roadblocks in the progress of the mission, particularly implementation of the "In-situ Slum Rehabilitation (ISSR)' and 'Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP)' verticals of the scheme.

Puri also urged all stakeholders, particularly the private sector and state governments, to join hands to fast- track the mission's objective of providing houses to all urban poor by 2022.
