NEW DELHI: In the first phase of a rewards programme, the Congress on Tuesday inducted three former BJP MPs who voted in favour of the UPA goverment during the July 2008 confidence motion.

The three former BJP MPs from Karnataka H T Sangliana (Bangalore North), Manjunath Kannur (Dharwad South) and Manorama Madhwaraj (Udupi) claimed they are joing the Congress as they were feeling suffocated in the BJP. They were among the eight members that the BJP had expelled from the party in the immediate aftermath of the trust vote.

Of the three, it was homecoming for Mr Kannur and Ms Madhwaraj. Announcing their induction, Congress general secretary Prithviraj Chavan said they are friends of the Congress party, who believe in the Congress ideology. Two of them have come back home, they have compared the two ideologies and they have chosen to return to the Congress.
They are welcome.

Dodging questions on phase two of the rewards programme, the Congress general secretary made no commitments about which constituencies the newly inducted members would contest. The process of ticket distribution has just begun and the Congress will make use of the best talent available. However, allocating seats to these three members could prove to be a tricky affair.
