2G spectrum scam: A Raja completes one year in jail

The Supreme Court's landmark judgment cancelling 122 telecom licenses came exactly a year after former telecom minister A Raja was arrested.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court's landmark judgment cancelling 122 telecom licenses came exactly a year after former telecom minister A Raja was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation. While the trial in the CBI special court is underway, the SC judgment on Thursday indicated its conclusion that the grant of licenses under Raja was irregular.

Since the arrest and the subsequent trial, the case has come to dominate the political discourse like few in legal history. The popular anti-corruption movement led by Anna Hazare was fuelled in parts by the dissatisfaction generated by the case.

A year from his incarceration, Raja is yet to apply for bail. He is said to have told his supporters that he won't come out of the jail till his name is cleared. He is also said to be planning a book on the 2G case.

In jail, Raja reportedly acts as a representative of undertrials, helping bring many of their problems to the attention of the jail authorities.
