2G scam: CBI to file another telecom company in new chargesheet
It will focus on another conspiracy and will cover another telco which acted as a front for another leading player in the sector, according to CBI source.
Appearing before the Supreme Court on March 29, CBI had said that it would complete its investigation into the scam by May 31. The process is likely to be delayed and the agency is expected to approach the Supreme Court before its vacation, to seek more time to file the chargesheet.
It will focus on another conspiracy and will cover another telecom company which acted as a front for another leading player in the sector, according to a CBI source. While the last date for submitting application for 2G spectrum was January 10, 2008, this firm submitted its application a day after the deadline. There are issues related to its cross-holding too, the source said.
After this, CBI will get cracking on the developments related to telecom licences during 2001-2007.
With the a fast-track court now in place to try the 2G scam, CBI's top officials are confident that the trial into the scam would be completed within 7-8 months and the verdict announced soon after. CBI sleuths are confident that the trial court would give a thumbs-up to the probe, as they had "built a full-proof case".
CBI had filed its first chargesheet into the 2G spectrum allocation scam on April 2 and a supplementary chargesheet on Monday. CBI claims that Monday's chargesheet was part of the first one.
The first chargesheet named former telecom minister A Raja, his two associates and six corporate bigwigs as accused, the supplementary chargesheet named another eight, including DMK Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi, fellow stakeholder in Kalaignar TV Sharad Kumar, promoters of DB Realty (Shahid Usman Balwa and Vinod Goenka), Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables (Asif Balwa and Rajiv B Agarwal) and Cineyug Films (Karim Morani), besides Raja.
