2G scam: BJP demands PM, Chidambaram's resignation

CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat did not ask for the resignations of the PM and home minister but said Raja's claims need to be probed by the CBI.

NEW DELHI: The aftershocks of the 2G-spectrum allocation scam continued to rattle the United Progressive Alliance government, with the main Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party demanding the "immediate resignation" of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and then finance minister P Chidambaram following the statements jailed former telecom minister A Raja made in court.

Raja told the special CBI court on Monday that he had done no wrong and all his decisions were approved by the then finance minister and the prime minister.

"The Bharatiya Janata Party demands the resignation of the Prime Minister and (Home Minister) P Chidambaram immediately. They have lost all political and moral right to continue in their positions for even a minute longer," BJP President Nitin Gadkari said.

CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat did not ask for the resignations of the PM and home minister but said Raja's claims need to be probed by the CBI. "Raja has made statements involving the PM and the then FM. These need to be investigated by CBI," Karat said.

Dubbing the 2G-spectrum episode the "biggest corruption scandal in the history of independent India", Gadkari said Raja's statements were direct evidence that Chidambaram and the PM were involved in the scandal.

"Congress president Sonia Gandhi always says that immediate action will be taken against corrupt officials. I would like to ask her what action she will take in the case of the former FM and the PM," Gadkari said.

The BJP president said that in all the major corruption scandals such as the Commonwealth Games scam, Adarsh scam and the 2G spectrum scam, his party has been saying all along that the Prime Minister's Office has been involved in the cover up of wrongdoings.

Gadkari claimed that when a delegation of BJP leaders met the CBI director recently, he had apprised him of the involvement of Chidambaram in the 2G scam.
