2G scam: Bail plea hearing of Kanimozhi and four others on December 1

NEW DELHI: Lawmaker Kanimozhi and four others accused in the 2G spectrum allocation scam will spend the rest of the month in prison after a Delhi court said it will continue to hear their bail pleas on December 1.

The trial in the 2G case will begin on Friday in the lower court. The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notices to the federal probe agency seeking its response to bail petitions of the accused by December 1. In her fifth attempt to get bail, Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi had approached the Delhi High Court on Saturday after the CBI Special Court had denied her bail on November 3.

Along with Kanimozhi, Kalaignar TV co-promoter and managing director Sharad Kumar, Cineyug Films promoter Karim Morani, Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables promoters Rajeev Agarwal and Asif Balwa had also sought bail from the High Court.

But Delhi High Court judge VK Shali postponed further hearing and issued notices to the Central Bureau of Investigation to respond to the applicants’ pleas.

Legal counsel representing the accused on Wednesday told the High Court that the lower court did not consider the probe agency’s stand of not opposing their bail petitions.

“We reiterate the stand taken before the trial court. There is no deviation from that,” CBI senior counsel Mohan Parasaran told the High Court. The CBI did not oppose bail pleas of Kanimozhi, Kumar, Morani, Agarwal and Balwa, who had been named in the supplementary charge sheet filed on April 25.
