2609 highly polluting industrial units identified: Natarajan
These units fall under 17 major categories of highly polluting industries in the country, Environment Minister Jayanthi Natarajan said in a written reply.

NEW DELHI: The Central Pollution Control Board has identified 2609 highly polluting industrial units across the country, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Tuesday.
These units fall under 17 major categories of highly polluting industries in the country, Environment Minister Jayanthi Natarajan said in a written reply.
"The CPCB under its Environmental Surveillance Scheme (ESS) is carrying out random inspection of units for verification of compliance of stipulated environmental standards. Based on such inspections, action is taken against the defaulting industries," she said.
Jayanthi said officials from the CPCB and Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) had carried out a surprise check of the industrial unit operating in the name of Pearl Bottling Private Limited near Visakhapatnam in January this year.
Based on the inspection report, the CPCB has directed the APPCB to "take appropriate action against the Unit for commencing production of 65 KLD mango slice drink without obtaining consent for operation," she said.
The CPCB asked the APPCB to ensure that the unit is not allowed to increase its water consumption for any further expansion of production capacity.
It also asked the APPCB to direct the Unit to properly operate Effluent Treatment Plant so as to meet the stipulated effluent standards.
The Minister, however, said the team observed that noise levels were meeting the standards.
