JAIPUR: A truck collided with a van overcrowded with revelers returning from a wedding in Rajasthan on Thursday, killing 24 people, police said.

All 24 victims were traveling in the van when the accident occurred early on Thursday about 130 kilometers (80 miles) northwest of Jodhpur, said city Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Kumar Narjari.

An eight-year-old girl was the only survivor from the van, Narjari said.

The cause of the crash was unclear as it occurred in a remote area in the early hours of the morning and there were no witnesses, he said.

It was not immediately clear what happened to the driver of the truck, who may have fled the scene, he said.

A news channel quoted police as saying that seven of the victims died while being transported to the nearest hospital, which was more than 100 kilometers (60 miles) away.
