GURGAON: A local court today granted bail to 77 of the 145 Maruti Suzuki India Limited workers, who were arrested by Gurgaon Police in the wake of death of company HR manager Avinesh Dev during arson and rioting in the plant in 2012.

The Supreme Court had earlier granted bail to two workers in February, out of the total 147 arrested workers, after 31 months of their arrests.

On the same ground, senior Supreme Court lawyer Vrinda Grover and local counsel Monu Kuhar had agrued in the court on 11 March in the court.

The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge S K Khanduja pronounced its judgement today.

After the incident at the Maruti Suzuki plant located at Manesar, around 25 km away from here, the management had terminated services of 550 permanent and over 1800 contract workers.

In the gruesome incident, Dev had burnt to death on July 18. Fifty-six workers were declared proclaimed offenders in the case.

Maruti Suzuki Workers Union member Sombir said they expect that the remaining workers would also be granted bail.
