2008 Assam serial blasts: CBI court convicts NDFB chief Ranjan Daimary, 13 Others

The court set up for the trial of serial blasts is expected to pronounce the quantum of punishments on Wednesday.

The CBI filed two charge-sheets in 2009 and 2010 naming 22 people, out of which 15 are in judicial custody, seven are absconding and three are reportedly dead.
A special court in Guwahati convicted 14 persons on Monday, including the chairman of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) Ranjan Daimary, for the 2008 serial blasts in Assam in which 88 people were killed and around 500 others injured.

The court set up for the trial of serial blasts is expected to pronounce the quantum of punishments on Wednesday.

On October 30, 2008, nine blasts had taken place in Guwahati’s Ganeshguri, Panbazar and Kachari areas and in Barpeta, Kokrajhar and Bongaigaon towns. The Assam government handed over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Daimary, who had Interpol’s red corner notice against his name, was arrested in Sharepur in Bangladesh and handed over to India in 2010.

Those absconding include B Bidai, Ganes Boro and Jitu Daimary, and the three reported dead are Binthilang, Uttam Swargiary and Tensu Narzary.
