20 Injured as train from Qazigund to Srinagar derails in Valley

The train started at 11 am from Qazigund and derailed within 15 minutes at Sadoora point. Its engines and three coaches skidded off the track.

SRINAGAR: At least 20 people were injured on Wednesday when a train from Qazigund to Srinagar derailed in Kulgam district, the first such incident since train services were launched in Kashmir Valley in 2008.

According to Railway officials, the train started at 11 am from Qazigund and derailed within 15 minutes at Sadoora point. Its engines and three coaches skidded off the track.

They said 20 people sustained injuries in the mishap. All of them were evacuated and sent to a hospital. Police is investigating the case.

A team of Railway officials has also rushed to the spot to investigate the cause of the mishap. The officials, however, ruled out sabotage, but asserted the accident needs to be probed because thousands of people are using the service daily. It seems a case of break failure.

Railways connect Qazigund and Baramulla and by next year it will be extended to Banihal as the longest tunnel of the track was completed last month.

The 273-km Udhampur-Katra-Quazigund-Baramulla project is expected to be fully operational by 2017.
