20 cops feared killed in Naxal attack

At least twenty policemen of Orissa's Special Operation Group (SOG) were feared killed in landmine explosion by Maoists in Malkangiri district, officials said.

NEW DELHI: At least twenty policemen of Orissa's Special Operation Group (SOG) were feared killed in landmine explosion by Maoists in Malkangiri district, officials said.

The special counter-insurgency unit was hit by a landmine blast while patrolling in Malkangiri district, a known Maoist stronghold in the far south of the state, Home Ministry officials said.

"Twenty policemen died instantly," one of the officials said on condition of anonymity.

A group of special commandos was attacked on a reservoir in the same area on June 29. That incident left around 35 dead and dozens injured.

The latest blow to security forces coincided with a special meeting in the Capital on how Central and state authorities should tackle the worsening Left-wing insurgency in the country.
