KOLKATA: Two officials of the bomb disposal squad of West Bengal police were killed and a few others, including some newspersons, were injured at Maoist-infested Lalgarh in West Midnapore district on Thursday when a landmine planted by the extremists exploded.
The experts were busy defusing the landmine when the same exploded. West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee expressed concern over the incident.
“The same team which had gone to Lalgarh on Thursday had earlier successfully carried out the job of defusing landmines on several occasions. We have to find out why they had failed to neutralise the landmine,” Bhattacharjee told newspersons at Writers’ Buildings, the state administrative headquarters on Thursday.
The incident occurred at Zhitka forest area under Lalgarh police station on Thursday morning. The bomb disposal squad of the district police, along with a team of journalists, had gone to Zhitka forest to defuse a landmine detected by the local villagers.
Additional superintendent of police (Headquarters) of West Midnapore district, Sumit Chaturvedi and the officer-in-charge of the Lalgarh police station, Tapas Banerjee also received injuries.

On Tuesday, Maoist activists had gunned down Anil Mahato, a local CPIM leader and his body guard at Belpahari police station areas in West Midnapore district. The Maoists had called a bandh in the district on Thursday to observe their foundation day.Download
