1st ODI: India elect to bat first against Australia

India skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat first in the tri-series opener ODI against Australia in Brisbane on Sunday.

NEW DELHI: India skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat first in the tri-series opener ODI against Australia in Brisbane on Sunday.

India have included master blaster Sachin Tendulkar and handed a maiden ODI cap to West Bengal batsman Manoj Tiwary while left out Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik, Piyush Chawla, Praveen Kumar, Munaf Patel and the injured Yuvraj Singh.

While hosts’ skipper Ricky Ponting returned to the side. Bad news for Australia as Matthew Hayden is still not fit and hence could not join the side with Stuart Clark. All-rounder James Hopes will open for Kangaroos while Ashley Noffke makes ODI debut for Australia.

Stuart Clark has opted out of the match due to "private family reasons", paving way for Noffke.

Sachin Tendulkar's return will definitely strengthen the batting line-up as he has been in very good form right through the Test series and the champion batsman will be keen to carry the momentum into the shorter version as well.

A few of the shots youngsters played at MCG suited some village bumpkins more than the trustees who hold the baton for India's future.

A silver lining for the Indians could be their bowling which usually thrives in helpful conditions.

India needs their top men to fire and it implies that Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Mahendra Singh Dhoni must come to party.

It rained considerably in Brisbane on Saturday and more thunderstorms are predicted for Sunday. The accompanying humidity will be to the liking of the Australians.
