1993 blasts: 4 Memons found guilty

The TADA court found 4 members of the Memon family guilty in the 1993 serial Mumbai blasts case.

MUMBAI: Four members of the Memon family, Yakub, Essa, Yusuf and Rubina were today found guilty in the 1993 serial blasts case here.

However, three other members of the family, Suleiman, Rahin and Hanifa have been set free by the special TADA court giving them the benefit of doubt.

The first batch of the judgement in the 1993 serial blasts that killed more than 250 people was pronounced by Judge P D Kode today after 13 years of the attacks.

One of the main accused, Tiger Memon has been declared absconding while his father Abdul Razzak passed away during the trial.

The four members of the Memon family have been found guilty of involvement in the conspiracy hatched for triggering the serial blasts.

The court will later today hear arguments from both the defence and the prosecution on the quantum of punishment to be given to the four convicts.

The court also rejected Yakub Memon's plea to allow one week's time for Rubina to surrender as she has to take care of her children and make appropirate arrangements for them.

The court said all the four would be taken into custody today itself.

As for the three other members of the Memon family, the court said although there was no clear case for their acquittal, there was not enough evidence to convict them and hence they were set free giving them the benefit of doubt.

The eighth member of the family, Abdul Razzak Memon, father of main accused Tiger Memon, passed away during the trial and the case against him has been abetted.

In a burst of anger, after their request was rejected, Yakub, who is also a Chartered Accountant by profession, stood up and shouted that he and his family did not want any lawyer to argue on their behalf for the quantum of sentence.

"We have seen that for the last 13 years innocent people have been labelled terrorists. We do not need anyone to protect us," an enraged Yakub said.

Later he moved to the dock where the other accused were sitting and his brothers were seen consoling him.
