19 Indian fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy

Nineteen Indian fishermen were arrested today by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly poaching in the country's waters.

COLOMBO :Nineteen Indian fishermen were arrested today by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly poaching in the country's waters.

Sri Lankan Navy said the arrest happened this afternoon in the seas, north of Talaimannar.

The Navy also seized four trawlers of the fishermen. The fishermen were being escorted to Talaimannar police station where further procedural steps would be taken against them, the Navy said.

Illegal fishing by fishermen of both India and Sri Lanka is a recurring problem for the respective authorities.
