AIZAWL: Meningitis has claimed the lives of at least 19 children in the villages of Southern Mizoram, where an equal number of kids have died of gastro-enteritis and other diseases, doctors visiting the area said on Friday.

"These children died of meningitis and gastro-enteritis in the areas adjoining Myanmar since October eight," Dr Lalrochhuanga, a pediatrician who visited the villages told PTI.

"The living conditions and sanitation have been pathetic here. Situation seems under control now after training was imparted to the villagers," he said.

Epidemiologist and leader of Rapid Response Team of state Health Department Dr Pachuau Lalmalsawma said, "apart from scarcity of food and malnutrition caused by famine, improper breast feeding aided in the spread of the disease."

Intense cold wave that hit the areas during winter also contributed to the deaths and spread of the disease, he said.

Scarcity of nutritious food worsened the situation, Dr Lalmalsawma said, adding delay in reaching medical care due to the remoteness of the area also aggravated the situation.
