NEW DELHI: 18 Delhi Police personnel have allegedly committed suicide in the last two-and-a-half years, even as the Union Home Ministry maintained the exact cause could not be ascertained in all the cases.

Nine police officials allegedly committed suicide in 2013, followed by seven in 2014 and two in 2015 (till June 30), Lok Sabha was told today.

"Delhi Police personnel have to work for long hours due to a variety of factors. However, rotational off is given to all staff as far as possible," Minister of State for Home Affairs, Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary said in a written reply.

"No such specific reasons have been noticed by Delhi Police in connection with suicides by police personnel.

"While the exact cause of suicide could not be ascertained in all the cases, the cause of suicide in some cases was found to be personal problem, illness and family circumstances," said the minister.
