NEW DELHI: Delhi government's Trade and Taxes Department have impounded 172 vehicles, allegedly bringing goods without bills, from several entry points of the national capital, railway stations and major markets.

"The Department of Trade and Taxes took up a special drive to check the goods vehicles on the night of May 28-29. The drive was aimed at catching vehicles bringing goods into Delhi without bills," an official press statement said.

"Goods brought by such vehicles are sold unaccounted, thus evading huge amount of VAT," it said, adding tax evasion of crores of rupees was detected.

The seized goods include liquor, ready-made garments, marble, granite, tiles, steel, cement, furniture, electronic items and footwear, the release stated.

"The vehicles detained include containers, very heavy vehicles, heavy vehicles and medium goods vehicles," it added.
