NEW DELHI: Mayawati was unanimously elected president of the Bahujan Samaj Party at the party’s national executive meeting held in Lucknow on Wednesday, continuing a tradition that started when she was first nominated to the post nearly 16 years ago in September 2003. In a changed political scenario, where the BSP is seeing erosion of its core support base among Dalit voters, the party emphasised on expanding its social support base.

“It is on the strength of the bahujan samaj and poor of the upper caste society that BSP will continuously keep on advancing on the path of attaining the goal of sarvjan hitay sarvjan sukhay (progress and prosperity for all),” it said in a statement.
