SHIMLA: The Election Commission today disqualified 16 candidates who contested the recent assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh but failed to submit their poll expenditure statements.

These candidates have been disqualified from contesting parliamentary or assembly election/by-election for next three years, Chief Electoral Officer Manisha Nanda said in a statement.

The disqualification decision was taken under a section of the Public Representation Act, Nanda said.

Among the 16 candidates disqualified, seven had contested the assembly polls on Ram Vilas Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party tickets, including its candidate from the Shimla assembly seat Rajesh Sharma.

The LJP had fielded 50 candidates for the polls to the 68-member HP assembly. All its candidates lost the elections.
