BANGALORE: About 15 per cent of the estimated 1.17 crore electorate on Thursday exercised their franchise by 10 AM in the third and final phase of Karnataka assembly elections in 69 constituencies spread across eight districts, according to electoral authorities.

The voting process, which began at 7 am, was peaceful so far, official sources said.

About 58,000 police personnel are maintaining vigil on 12,389 polling stations in the districts of Belgaum, Bagalkot, Bijapur, Gulbarga,Bidar, Gadag, Dharwad and Haveri.

Brisk voting was witnessed in parts of Gulbarga and Dharwad where people queued up to cast votes in the morning.

However, the turnout was low in Bijapur and Bagalkot where only about nine per cent of votes had been polled.

The temperatures in these Mumbai-Karnataka and Hyderbad-Karnataka exceeds 40 degree celcius by noon, making it difficult for people to venture out.

The poll fortunes of 699 aspirants including former chief minister N Dharam Singh, KPCC President M Mallikarjun Kharge, MPs-- Ramesh Jigajingai, Basavanagouda Patil Yatnal of BJP, Narasingharao Suryavanshi (CONG) Jagadish Shettar (BJP) H K Patil and A B Patil (both Congress) will be decided today.

The first phase of polling was held in 89 segments on May 10 and the second phase covering 66 constituencies on May 16. The counting of votes will be taken up on May 25.
