15 die as bus plunges into gorge in India

Fifteen people were killed and six others injured in northern India when their bus veered off a road into a mountain gorge.

SHIMLA: Fifteen people were killed and six others injured in northern India when their bus veered off a road into a mountain gorge on Sunday, police said.

The bus plunged into the 300-metre gorge near Rampur, 150 (90 miles) kilometers from the Himachal Pradesh state capital Shimla.

"There were 21 people travelling on the bus and 15 of them were killed while six were injured," senior state government official Dilip Negi said.

Three of the injured were in serious condition, he said. Police were investigating the cause of the crash.

Driving accidents are common in India where bad roads, overloaded ill-maintained vehicles and rash driving often create a deadly combination.
