14 districts in Assam witnessed higher population growth more than state' census

GUWAHATI: In Assam 14 districts Dhubri, Morigaon, Goalpara, Darrang, Nagaon, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Cachar ,Dhemaji, Kamrup(M), Karbi Anglong and lakhimpur )out of 27 districts recorded population growth rate above State Growth Rate.

According to final Census data released on Thursday While during the period population of India grew by 17.7%, against 21.5% in the previous decade, population of Assam grew by 17.07% during 2001-11, against 18.92% in the previous decade.

Among the major States, highest decadal growth in population has been recorded in Bihar (25.4%). In Assam Dhubri district, which is border district along Indo-Bangladesh border recorded highest 24.44 % population growth and Kokrajhar district in Bodoland witnessed the lowest growth rate of 5.2 % growth during 2001-2011.

The census observed that Urban Area Growth Rate (27.89) is higher than the Rural area (15.47) in Assam. Around 2.68 crore persons live in rural areas of Assam as per Census 2011 – which is roughly 86% of the total population and around 43.9 lakhs persons live in urban areas-around 14% of total population.

Assam ranked 15th Position in terms of density in the country. Around 14.9 % population belongs to 0-6 Years in Assam.
