Tanveer Pathan and Jahir Patel were produced before the Metropolitan Magistrate G M Patel after their 24-hour police custody. The court sent them to 14-day police custody till September 25 after the Surat Crime Branch, investigating the matter, sought further remand for interrogation.

Enumerating the reasons for remand, special public prosecutor (SPP) J M Panchal said Tanveer and Jahir were responsible for bringing two explosive-laden cars, stolen from Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra, to Surat city.

The police had recovered 17.5 kg of ammonium nitrate and 9.5 kg of shrapnels along with batteries, wires, integrated circuits and other materials. Panchal said the duo was needed to find out how they got the cars from Navi Mumbai, who brought it to Surat and where were these cars taken to prior to the serial blasts in Ahmedabad.

He said it was also important to know who brought the explosives and from where did they get the funds to purchase it. Remand was also needed to get whereabouts of others involved in planting of bombs in Surat city, Panchal said.
