12 sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment in fake currency case

A court in Gujarat's Mehasana district on Saturday sentenced 12 people to 10 years' imprisonment for their involvement in a fake currency racket.


AHMEDABAD: A court in Gujarat's Mehasana district on Saturday sentenced 12 people to 10 years' imprisonment for their involvement in a fake currency racket.

Joint District and Sessions Judge D H Shah also slapped a fine of Rs 25,000 on each of them.

On a tip off, police had caught one person with fake currency of Rs 500 denominations in February 2007. During his remand they found that a dozen people were involved in the racket.

The police had recovered counterfeit currency with face value of Rs 9.22 lakh from the accused. They had also seized printing machines and computers from them.

Public Prosecutor S K Bhrambhatt said in the court that the accused were trying to damage the country's economy by prining fake notes and introducing them in market.
