12 members from Rajya Sabha in JPC on One Nation, One Election

The Rajya Sabha approved the formation of a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to examine the 'One Nation One Election' bills. The 39-member committee, comprising 27 Lok Sabha and 12 Rajya Sabha members, includes representation from various parties.

Before the Rajya Sabha was adjourned sine die on Friday, the House adopted the motion moved by union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal regarding forming the Joint Parliamentary Committee for two bills on 'One Nation One Election.' Twelve members from the upper house were nominated in the JPC.

The JPC will have four MPs from the BJP, two from Congress and one each from AAP, JDU, TMC, DMK, BJD and YSR Congress from the Rajya Sabha.

The four BJP MPs are Ghanshyam Tewari, Kavita Patidar, Bhubaneshwar Kalita and K Laxman. From Congress the two MPs are Mukul Wasnik and Randeep Surjewala. Apart from that Sanjay Jha from the JDU, Sanjay Singh from AAP, Vijaysai Reddy from YSR Congress, Saket Gokhale from TMC, P Wilson from the DMK and Manas Ranjan Mangraj from the BJD are in the JPC from the RS.


Meghwal moved The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, to amend the Constitution, also called the 'One Nation One Election Bill'. Apart from these two, the minister also moved for the bills to amend the Government of Union Territories Act, 1963, the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991 and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 to be referred to the Joint Parliamentary Committee.

The current JPC will have 27 members from LS and 12 from RS. The committee will be tasked to submit the report to Lok Sabha on the first day of the last week of the next session of Parliament.
