12 held for Rishra violence; BJP state chief Sukanta Majumdar's convoy stopped

At least 12 persons have been arrested in Rishra of Hooghly district in connection with the arson and violence on Sunday evening following a Ram Navami rally, two days after the Howrah violence. Section 144 has been imposed and the internet continues to be suspended in the area.

Meanwhile, BJP leaders have staged a sit-in protest for more than six hours on GT Road on Monday after the police stopped BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar and other leaders near Bishalakshmi Tala in Hooghly's Konnagar while they were on their way to the houses of the BJP workers.

Lifting the blockade, Majumdar said they have lifted the protest as it is the main road and was causing difficulties to the common people. High drama unfolded since Monday morning as Majumdar's convoy was stopped. The BJP leaders initially requested the police officials to allow three leaders to visit the houses of their party workers in Konnagar.


When denied, the BJP leaders staged a protest for more than six hours on GT Road, the main arterial road in the area, bringing traffic to a standstill. The BJP leaders, including Majumdar and others, clashed with the police while trying to break the barricade. Majumdar told the police that he cannot be stopped to visit areas where Section 144 has not been imposed. A huge police force has been deployed in the area.
