New Delhi: Farmer unions said they are planning a historic mega tractor march on Republic Day, with more than 100,000 tractors expected to enter Delhi and drive nearly 50 kilometres on Outer Ring Road, including crossing Rajghat.

Farmer union leader Kulwant Sandhu said the unions have issued an appeal in Punjab and Haryana that “no tractor or youngster should remain at home and should come to Delhi by January 24”. Sandhu said youngsters have been told to bring tractors and trolleys properly covered with sheets and to pack in quilts as “we have to fight a long agitation now and make a show of strength so as to put a lot of pressure on the government and go back home with an achievement of repeal (of the three farm laws)”.

According to intelligence reports available with the Centre, up to 150,000 tractors are being readied to enter Delhi on January 26.

Unions have said the march will be peaceful. They have told Delhi Police that their march won’t enter Central Delhi on Republic Day and have rejected the suggestion of the police to hold their march instead on the two peripheral expressways around Delhi, the KMP and Eastern Peripheral Expressway.
