Kolkata: 10 persons, including two security personnel, were injured when police resorted to lathicharge on the workers clashing at the factory gate of Hind Motors' Uttarpara plant in Hooghly district on Tuesday.

Additional police picket was posted near the factory which witnessed a spate of violence when a section of the employees, belonging to Sangrami Shramik Karmachari Union (SSKU), agitating on the issue of salary and allowances payment for last 27 days prevented CITU-backed workers from joining duty, IGP (law and order) Raj Kanojia said.

As the police intervened to disperse the warring groups, they were subjected to brickbatting in which two cops were injured, he said.

Police then used lathis to bring the situation under control, he said.

SSKU President Amitabha Bhattacharya alleged that eight SSKU workers were injured in the police lathicharge, charging the CITU with bringing temporary outsiders to work in the factory which was objected to by SSKU workers.

The Hindustan Motors' Uttarpara plant, the country's oldest automobile unit which manufactures Ambassador cars, is facing labour strife for the last 27 days.
