MUMBAI: Ten corporators mainly from the ruling Shiv Sena in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) could face disqualification and criminal proceedings after the caste certificates submitted by them were declared invalid by a caste scrutiny committee.

Five corporators from the newly elected Shiv Sena-BJP combine, two from the Samajwadi Party and one candidate each from the NCP, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and an independent were those who found their certificates declared invalid on June 2.

The certificates were submitted at the time of elections to the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai in February, which the Shiv Sena BJP combine won convincingly.

No action has been taken against any of the corporator yet since in many of the cases their appeals are pending before the Bombay High Court or its benches.

The caste scrutiny committee has also sought the relevant certificates from six other corporators who have not yet provided them.

Of the corporators who have not provided their certificates, four are from the Sena-BJP alliance and an independent and Congress.
