1-month jail for drunken driving

A court here on Wednesday enhanced the jail term for drunken driving but fixed a fine of Re 1 for the offence.

MUMBAI: A court here on Wednesday enhanced the jail term for drunken driving but fixed a fine of Re 1 for the offence.

“Earlier, those convicted for drunken driving were sentenced for five-seven days and the court levied fines in excess of Rs 1,000. We successfully appealed to the Bandra Court on Wednesday asking for a reduction in fine and an increase in sentences which will prove a deterrent,” DCP (traffic) Harish Baijal said.

Two offenders amongst 207 caught for drunken driving on Christmas Day were sentenced to a month in jail by the court today. Four more were awarded a month’s simple imprisonment term.

“This sentence is at par with that for other crimes like robberies. We are happy that we were able to convince the courts about the seriousness of drunken driving,” Mr Baijal said, adding some of the offenders are well-to-do educated people.

The police has since June booked over 12,000 motorists for drunken driving and secured sentence for 2,555 of them.
