1.34 lakh people committed suicide in 2013

NEW DELHI: As many as 1.34 lakh suicide cases - led by Maharashtra and closely followed by Tamil Nadu - were reported in the country in 2013, Lok Sabha was informed today.

In 2013, Maharashtra reported 16,622 cases of suicide while Tamil Nadu reported 16,601, Minister of State for Home Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary said replying to a written question.

Other states where a large number of suicide cases were reported in 2013 include Andhra Pradesh (14,607 cases), West Bengal (13,055), Karnataka (11,266), Madhya Pradesh (9,446) and Kerala (8,646).

In 2012, there were 1,35,445 cases of suicide reported in the country while in 2011, the number was 1,35,585.
