"There's some hope of de-escalation between the U.S. and Iran. Reports are that mediators are proposing a 10-day ceasefire, which could put the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) back on track," analysts said, referring to the June interim deal.

However, this won't be easy as major differences remain between Washington and Tehran, while Trump has warned of retaliation after several U.S. troops were killed, ING added.

A senior Iranian official told Reuters ‌Tehran had received a proposal from mediators for a 10-day ceasefire in efforts to salvage the deal signed on June 17, intended to pave the way for a lasting agreement to end the war that began on February 28 with U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran.

The diplomatic push followed another night of U.S. strikes on Iranian cities and attacks by Iran's Revolutionary Guards on U.S. military assets across the region. Later on Monday, U.S. Central Command said it had begun another round of strikes on Iran.

A tanker in the Strait of Hormuz reported being struck by an unknown projectile, forcing its crew to abandon ship and board a lifeboat, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations ‌agency said on Tuesday. Vessel crossings via the strait also dropped further amid growing caution following fresh attacks between the U.S. and Iran.

Additionally, Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis said on Monday they would impose a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia, opening a potential new front against the U.S. in its war on Iran and raising the threat to global energy supplies and trade beyond the Gulf.

Dollar wavers as markets grapple with Gulf tensions

The U.S. dollar hovered near a one-week high on Tuesday, with markets torn between conflicting Middle East signals, as hostilities in the region stoked renewed fears over energy supplies while hopes for a ceasefire offered some relief.

Against the yen, the dollar was largely flat at 162.49 yen. The euro was little changed at $1.1417, while the British pound was roughly 0.1% firmer at $1.3441 after Britain's new Prime Minister Andy Burnham vowed to stick to fiscal rules.

The U.S. dollar index, which ‌measures the currency against a basket of six peers, was steady at 100.93, after touching its highest level since July 15 in previous session.

NSA Doval meets Saudi FM; discusses energy security and regional situation

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval visited Saudi Arabia and held talks with Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on strengthening “energy security” and protection of “maritime corridors.”

The visit comes amid heightened tensions in West Asia, with concerns over disruptions to key shipping routes and energy supplies following the continuing conflict between the US and Iran.

According to the Saudi Foreign Ministry, Doval met Prince Faisal in Riyadh. The two sides reviewed bilateral relations and discussed ways to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries.

This is Doval's third visit to the Kingdom this year.

Hormuz now just a shadow of its former self as tension grows

Vessel activity fell further at Hormuz at the week started, shipping data has revealed. The fall came following a fresh exchange of attacks between the United States and Iran.

As per Kpler data, just four commodity vessels crossed the strait on Monday, mostly on the Iranian route, down from seven the previous day.

The four vessels included two tankers that exited the strait as well as two vessels that entered. The two vessels that exited comprised a tanker that was carrying petrochemicals and one that was empty.

Tanker crew abandons vessel after reported projectile strike in Strait of Hormuz, UKMTO says

A tanker in the Strait of Hormuz reported being struck by an unknown projectile, forcing its crew to abandon the vessel and board a lifeboat, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency (UKMTO) said on Tuesday.

UKMTO said it had received multiple reports on Tuesday that a tanker had broadcast over VHF Channel 16 that it had been hit by an unknown projectile. The incident was reported eight nautical miles east of Oman's Limah and authorities were investigating.

UKMTO said the tanker's company security officer had reported that the crew had abandoned the vessel and were aboard a lifeboat and no environmental impact had been reported.

UKMTO did not identify the ship or its owner.

Iran Guards say stopped two oil tankers in Hormuz

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said Tuesday they stopped two "non-compliant oil tankers" attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz, state news agency IRNA reported.

"Two non-compliant oil tankers attempting to pass through the unsafe southern route of the Strait of Hormuz were stopped after explosions caused extensive fires aboard them," the Guards said in a statement carried by IRNA.

US military says it's carrying out its 10th consecutive night of strikes on Iran

The United States military said late Monday it was carrying out its 10th consecutive night of strikes on Iran in a push to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The renewed bombings followed the death of another American service member, and came after Iran launched attacks on American allies Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, home of the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet.

U.S. Central Command said on social media that the latest strikes “are designed to further degrade Iranian military capabilities used to attack commercial shipping" in the strait.

Even as the U.S. and Iran inch closer to all-out war again, glimmers of hope appeared on the diplomatic front, as Iran's interior minister traveled to Pakistan, a key mediator in the conflict, for talks.

The interim deal signed last month that was meant to end the fighting has crumbled. Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz — a vital supply route for world energy supplies — has largely stalled. And as fighting intensifies, both sides have targeted civilian infrastructure relied on by millions of people.

The escalation has pushed oil prices higher in recent weeks. Benchmark Brent crude traded Monday above $88 a barrel and regular gasoline in the U.S. climbed to an average of $4 a gallon, keeping pressure on Americans' wallets ahead of midterm elections this fall.

Saudi condemns Houthi maritime blockade threat; group warns of escalation

Saudi Arabia on Monday condemned what it described as allegations by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis that the kingdom was besieging the Yemeni people, after the group announced it would impose a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia. The Houthis said on Monday they would impose a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia, opening a potential new front against the United States in its war with Iran and raising the threat to global energy supplies and trade beyond the Gulf.

In their statement, the Houthis' armed forces said they were declaring "a maritime embargo against the criminal Saudi enemy, based on the equation of 'an eye for an eye', effective immediately" in response to what they called "an unjust and oppressive siege" imposed on Yemen by the Saudis.

New strikes as Trump warns Iran will pay for US troop deaths

Trump warned Iran on Monday that it would pay "many times over" for every American soldier killed, while Tehran's Yemeni allies, the Houthi rebels, threatened to broaden the war with a blockade of Saudi ports.

Following the deaths of at least three US soldiers in the past several days, the United States launched a new round of strikes against Iran late Monday, the tenth consecutive night of attacks.

Hours later, the Iranian army said it had targeted US assets in Kuwait, after the Revolutionary Guards earlier claimed to have struck sites in Jordan, Bahrain and Syria.

Jordan's army said its air defences had downed three Iranian missiles targeting the kingdom, with no injuries or damage reported.

US attacks deepen hardship, not dissent, in Iran's restive south

Opposition to Iran's clerical rulers has long simmered in the country's impoverished south. But after bearing the brunt of U.S. strikes this month, many ?residents are directing their anger at President Donald Trump and an ?air campaign they say has upended their lives.

Southern Iran, which borders the Strait of Hormuz, has been a major target of U.S. ?attacks on ports, energy facilities and transport infrastructure. Washington says the strikes are aimed at curbing Iran's ability to threaten shipping through the strategic waterway. Tehran says they have gone far beyond legitimate military targets.

Most of the more than two dozen southern residents Reuters interviewed by phone or messaging apps agreed that the strikes had gone beyond targets with a clear military purpose.

US-Iran War LIVE: Diplomatic exchanges with US ongoing via mediators, says Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson

  • Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei on Monday revealed that Washington has recently transmitted messages to Tehran via third-party intermediaries, even as heavy fighting persists between the two factions.
  • Addressing a news conference in Tehran, the spokesperson confirmed the backchannel communications but refrained from disclosing specifics regarding the diplomatic notes.
  • "We have been informed by mediators. We have received messages, without going into details, but the main point is that the diplomatic apparatus has been active in recent days and ideas have been conveyed to us by certain mediators," the Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
  • Baghaei firmly pinned the blame for the current military flare-up on Washington, asserting that the responsibility for the recent escalation lies with the US.
  • Concurrently, the spokesperson issued a clear warning to neighbouring nations against allowing American forces to utilise their bases for military operations against Iran.
  • "We have repeatedly emphasised that we have no hostility towards the countries of the region, but we expect them to do their duty and not allow attacks on Iran from their territory," Baghaei stated.
  • Reaffirming Tehran's resolve to counter ongoing American military operations, the spokesperson warned that Iranian forces would maintain their retaliatory posture.
  • He added, "As long as these crimes continue, our armed forces will respond to them."

US-Iran War LIVE: US gas prices hit an average of $4 a gallon again as the US and Iran launch attacks

  • U.S. gas prices jumped to an average of $4 a gallon again Monday as the U.S. and Iran launched more attacks.
  • According to motor club federation AAA, the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline is now back to $4. The average price a year ago was $3.14 a gallon.
  • The price is a national average, meaning drivers in some states have been paying well over $4 a gallon for a while now, while others pay less. Prices vary between states due to factors ranging from nearby supply to differing tax rates.
  • People around the world are also dealing with high gas prices as a result of the war.
  • Gas prices first went over $4 a gallon on average at the end of March. They dipped below that in mid-June and continued to fall as crude oil prices eased when the U.S. and Iran reached an interim deal. Even then, President Donald Trump expressed frustration that gas prices weren’t falling as quickly as oil prices.
  • Oil prices have climbed again in recent days as the U.S. and Iran move closer to resuming an all-out war.
  • Brent crude, the international standard, rose 3.2% to $90.95 per barrel Monday and benchmark U.S. crude climbed 2.8% to $84.04 per barrel.

US-Iran War LIVE: US strikes Iran over troop deaths as Israel warns Tehran's attacks are coming close

The United States launched more airstrikes at Iran on Sunday in response to the killing of US troops, and Iran fired missiles toward Jordan that risked widening the conflict into neighbouring Israel. Both sides have targeted civilian infrastructure relied on by millions of people. The US military said the latest strikes targeted Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard to retaliate for Friday's killing of troops in Jordan. The campaign, now in its second week, has seen the US target bridges, water desalination plants and electrical facilities in Iran. Tehran has hit US-allied countries throughout the Middle East. Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain again activated air defences for incoming Iranian drones and missiles.
