Pentagon says it needs $80 billion to cover Iran war costs and other military expenses
The Pentagon needs about $80 billion to cover costs arising from the Iran war as well as other unrelated military expenses, Deputy Defense Secretary Stephen Feinberg told lawmakers in phone calls this week, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the discussions.
The funding request comes as members of Congress have pressed the Trump administration to provide a comprehensive estimate of the war's financial toll. The conflict began on February 28 and has raised concerns among lawmakers over its impact on US military readiness.
Among the key worries is that the conflict significantly depleted valuable munitions stockpiles that could be required to respond to security threats in other parts of the world.

US-Iran War Live: Israel in talks with US over continuing its Lebanon troop deployment, officials say
Israel is holding negotiations with the U.S. as it seeks to continue its deployment of troops in southern Lebanon, two Israeli officials including a senior Israeli official close to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Reuters on Thursday.
The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive talks, made the comments a day after the U.S. and Iran signed an interim pact that calls for parties to ensure "the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Lebanon."
Israel expanded its invasion of southern Lebanon after the Lebanese militia Hezbollah opened fire at Israel on March 2 in support of its ally Iran. It has since staged a devastating air and ground campaign that it says aims at rooting out Hezbollah.
Israel describes the territory it has seized in Lebanon, Gaza and Syria as "buffer zones" between it and its enemies, a core facet of Israel's recent security policy. Netanyahu has rejected calls for Israel to withdraw from those territories.
The senior Israeli official told Reuters that Israel was "conducting stubborn negotiations" with Washington over continuing its deployment of troops in southern Lebanon.

US Iran War Live Updates: Oil down 2% after US, Iran sign ceasefire agreement
Oil prices fell more than $1 per barrel on Thursday after the U.S. and Iran signed an interim agreement that would end the Iran war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and waive U.S. sanctions on Tehran's oil, boosting the oil supply outlook.
Brent crude futures were down $1.64, or 2.06%, at $77.91 a barrel as of 0427 GMT, and U.S. West Texas Intermediate fell $1.80, or 2.34%, to $74.99 a barrel.
The benchmarks resumed their decline, reversing gains made on Wednesday after U.S. President Donald Trump said he could resume his bombing campaign if Iran's leaders "don't behave".
"The sell-off extended as energy markets continued to aggressively price in a faster-than-expected return of Iranian barrels following the recent U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding," IG market analyst Tony Sycamore said in a note.
The 14-point memorandum begins a 60-day negotiation period during which Iran will allow toll-free passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil and gas shipping lane. The deal calls for traffic through the strait to be restored to its full capacity within 30 days.
The preliminary accord defers many of the more difficult issues such as Iran's nuclear program, and also requires the U.S. and its partners to come up with a $300 billion plan to finance Iran's recovery.
US Iran War Live Updates: Trump-signed MOU promises 'permanent' ceasefire, sanctions relief & a $300 billion plan for Tehran
The United States and Iran have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) declaring an immediate and permanent end to military operations, including in Lebanon, while setting a 60-day deadline to negotiate a final agreement that includes sanctions relief for Tehran, reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a proposed $300 billion reconstruction package for Iran.
The text of the agreement, released by Washington and Tehran, commits both sides and their allies to "an immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts" and obliges them not to initiate war or threaten the use of force against each other. The final agreement, once negotiated, is to be endorsed by a binding United Nations Security Council resolution.
Under the MoU, the United States will immediately begin removing its blockade of Iranian ports and end it within 30 days. Washington has also undertaken to terminate all sanctions against Iran, unfreeze restricted Iranian assets and issue immediate waivers allowing exports of Iranian crude oil, petroleum products and associated services, including banking, insurance and transportation.
Iran, for its part, has pledged not to procure or develop nuclear weapons and agreed that the fate of its enriched uranium stockpile will be determined through a mutually agreed mechanism, with the minimum requirement being down-blending under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Pending a final deal, Tehran will maintain the status quo of its nuclear programme, while the United States will impose no new sanctions or deploy additional forces in the region.
The agreement also envisages the immediate resumption of commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, with Iran committing to ensure safe, toll-free passage of commercial vessels for 60 days. Additionally, the United States and its regional partners will formulate a reconstruction and economic development plan worth at least $300 billion for Iran.

Speaking on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France, Trump said the United States would "most likely" sign a deal with Iran and added that the agreement would be concluded shortly. He also said technical negotiations on Iran's nuclear stockpiles would start immediately, signalling a move towards implementing key provisions of the proposed agreement.
Trump said Israel had been provided a copy of the MOU as Washington worked to build support for the framework among regional partners. The proposed accord remains a memorandum of understanding and is expected to be followed by more detailed negotiations before a final agreement is reached.
The US president also voiced concern over the situation in Lebanon, saying he felt "very bad for Lebanon" amid continuing regional tensions and efforts to stabilise the Middle East following months of conflict.

I think it's obviously a risk that this could collapse over the term of this arrangement based on history and based on the fact that you can never trust the Iranians to honour any promise they ever give. They're an apocalyptic regime that is not driven by the same rational considerations that freedom-loving open market economies are. United States has done well to bring them to this point, but holding them at that point, I think will continue to be a challenge, but I'm optimistic that the President will be able to achieve that.

Israel Iran War Live Updates: UN chief welcomes announcement of peace deal between US and Iran
UN chief Antonio Guterres has welcomed the announcement of a peace deal between the US and Iran that provides for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Secretary General Guterres on Sunday described it as a critical step towards the peaceful settlement of the conflict.
The US and Iran finalised a deal to end their 107-day war and open the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway used to ferry one-fifth of the global oil supplies, on Friday after an in-person signing of the agreement in Switzerland.
US President Donald Trump made the announcement on Truth Social on Sunday evening, easing pressure on the global energy markets, as officials said the peace agreement would be signed on June 19 in Switzerland.
Guterres welcomed the announcement that the “United States and Iran have agreed on a peace deal that provides for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, as well as a framework for further negotiations," a statement issued by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, said Sunday.
"This represents a critical step towards the peaceful settlement of the conflict,” Dujarric said.

"The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete," U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform around 5:30 p.m. ET local time in Washington (2130 GMT) on Sunday. His post came shortly after Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose country has served as a mediator, announced a deal had been struck early on Monday local time.
The memorandum of understanding is scheduled to be officially signed on Friday in Switzerland.
The precise terms were not immediately known. Sharif said in a post on X that the pact called for "the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon."
Lebanon has been a sticking point in negotiations, with Israel and Hezbollah ignoring calls from Trump and others to stop their attacks on each other in recent weeks.
In a statement, the secretariat of Iran's Supreme National Security Council said war and military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, would end permanently starting on Monday night.
